January 2025•5 min read

To install APK files on Android, you need to enable installation from unknown sources. The process varies by Android version—here's how to do it on any device.
Android 14, 13, 12, 11 & 10
Modern Android versions use per-app permissions for better security:
- Try to open the APK file
- You'll see a prompt: 'For your security, your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps'
- Tap Settings
- Toggle on Allow from this source
- Go back and tap Install
Alternative Method:
- Go to Settings → Apps
- Tap the three dots → Special access
- Select Install unknown apps
- Choose your file manager or browser
- Toggle on Allow from this source
Android 9 (Pie) and 8 (Oreo)
Similar to newer versions, but the menu location may differ:
- Go to Settings → Apps & notifications
- Tap Advanced → Special app access
- Select Install unknown apps
- Choose the app you'll use to install APKs
- Toggle on the permission
Android 7 (Nougat) and Earlier
Older versions use a global toggle:
- Go to Settings → Security
- Find Unknown sources
- Toggle it on
- Read the warning and tap OK
Samsung Devices
Samsung phones may have slightly different menus:
- Settings → Biometrics and security
- Scroll to Install unknown apps
- Select the app to grant permission
Security Tips
- Only enable for trusted apps you're about to install
- Disable the permission after installation
- Download APKs from reliable sources like Apkhitz
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled
Troubleshooting
If you can't find the option:
- Search 'unknown' in Settings
- Check under Security or Privacy menus
- Some work phones may have this disabled by IT policy
